What is Quality Assurance?

Internal quality assurance (IQA) refers to the processes and activities undertaken by a centre to ensure that the qualifications and courses they offer meet specific standards and criteria. It involves internal monitoring and evaluating the teaching, learning, assessment, and overall delivery of the qualifications or courses.

On the other hand, external quality assurance (EQA) is conducted by awarding bodies (external bodies or agencies independent of the educational institution). These external bodies assess whether an institution’s internal quality assurance processes effectively maintain and enhance standards. They evaluate various aspects such as curriculum design, teaching methods, assessment practices, learner support systems, and overall performance.

The main difference between IQA and EQA lies in who carries out the evaluation process. IQA is conducted internally within an educational institution by its staff members or designated individuals responsible for ensuring compliance with set standards. EQA is carried out by external agencies or regulatory bodies to provide an unbiased perspective on an institution’s adherence to national or industry standards.

Internal and external quality assurance are essential in maintaining high-quality qualifications and courses. Internal quality assurance ensures continuous improvement within an institution’s processes, while external quality assurance validates its practices.

A combination of both internal and external quality assurance mechanisms ensures that qualifications and courses meet rigorous standards while promoting ongoing improvement in education delivery.
